By e-bike through the Káli Basin: a day to remember

There are mornings when you don't need big plans. Just take the key off the hook, wheel the e-bike out of the Napkelte or Délibáb yard and let the Káli Basin lead the way.

That is exactly what we did. Now let me tell you what a perfect day in the saddle looks like, starting from Szigliget.

An e-bike frees you from exactly what most people fear in the Balaton Uplands: the climbs. There are plenty of hills and bends around here, but that is exactly what makes the ride beautiful.

And that is what makes an e-bike tour of the Káli Basin an experience. You don't arrive at a viewpoint out of breath, but smiling, with energy left for what really matters: tasting, stopping and looking around.

A glass of Olaszrizling on the terrace of a Badacsony cellar, the first wine tasting of the Káli Basin e-bike tour

Wine tasting at the foot of Badacsony / The first glass of Olaszrizling below the volcanic hill

The foot of Badacsony is the place for the first real stop. Several of the small cellars on the hillside open in the morning, and this is where the first tasting comes: a sip of Olaszrizling that holds the character of the whole region.

The fresh, mineral wines born from volcanic soil show themselves especially well in Badacsony. And the advantage of an e-bike is that after the break it is easier to get back in the saddle and ride on comfortably to the next stop.

Whitewashed folk house with an arched porch in Salföld, one of the stops on the Káli Basin bike tour

The folk architecture of Salföld: a journey back in time

Salföld is the kind of village where you automatically lower your voice.
The village's intact folk architecture is one of the most valuable listed ensembles in the country , with whitewashed houses, arched porches and stone walls. It is worth leaving the bike here and wandering the winding streets on foot.

A few minutes from here is the Salföld Farm , where donkeys, horses and native Hungarian animals welcome you.

A coffee, a short rest in the shade, and you are recharged and ready to go on.

Kékkút and the Theodora spring / A sip that changes the day

Many people know the name Kékkút, and for good reason: this is where the famous spring linked to Theodora mineral water is found.

Stopping at the spring in the village is like listening to the heartbeat of the landscape. A sip of fresh water into your bottle, a deep breath, and you feel that this day is about something other than everyday life.

A rustic wine terrace in the Káli Basin in warm golden light, overlooking Lake Balaton and Hegyestű hill, with smoked beef brisket and a glass of white wine on a wooden table

Lunch at Kőróka Cellar: wine and BBQ on Szűcs Hill

One of the highlights of the day was Kőróka Wine & BBQ on Szűcs Hill, near Mindszentkálla. Here the meat is smoked in a smoker at 110–130 degrees for up to 10–14 hours, and the result is worth every minute of waiting.

Tender beef brisket on your plate and local wine in your glass. The phrase 'cyclist's wine' really makes sense here: light, easy to drink, just enough that you can still get back in the saddle responsibly.

This is the stop where there is no point in hurrying. It feels good to sit on the terrace, look around the panoramic landscape and enjoy the view, the quiet surroundings and the calm Balaton rhythm that made the trip worthwhile.

A farmers' market in Káptalantóti in the Balaton Uplands, with wooden stalls of artisan cheeses, fresh bread, homemade syrups and local products in the sunshine

Wooden stalls with local cheeses and baked goods at the Liliomkert market in Káptalantóti

If you are riding on a Sunday, don't miss the Liliomkert market in Káptalantóti. The most famous farmers' market in the Balaton Uplands welcomes visitors every Sunday from 7 am to 2 pm with artisan cheeses, fresh baked goods, homemade syrups and an atmosphere that makes many people travel from the other end of the country.

Here you fill your basket with small treasures, then head back towards Szigliget, where a relaxing afternoon awaits on the terrace of Napkelte or Délibáb.
You can sit down with a refreshing drink, admire the view and let the whole day's experience slowly settle.

This is the kind of day you don't experience as a programme but as a state of mind. If you long for an experience like this, book your stay with us and start exploring from your own terrace.

A perfect May in Szigliget: 5 activities worth planning for

May is a special month on the north shore of Lake Balaton. The summer crowds have not yet arrived, the vineyards are fresh and green, it is quiet below the castle, and Szigliget shows itself as it really is: a small Balaton village where you can finally breathe freely.

If you book Napkelte or the Délibáb Guesthousenow, from your terrace you will see exactly what is on the cover photos: the silhouette of Badacsony, the sparkling lake and that special spring light you only get at this time of year. We have collected 5 activities that are all easy to reach from Szigliget.

The ruins of Szigliget Castle up close, in pre-season morning light, with no one else there. Silence, stone, blue sky.

When is it better to be here than in July?

Seriously: now.

In early May the free beaches at Lake Balaton are already open and the shore comes to life, but most visitors have not yet arrived. Locals say this is when Lake Balaton is at its most genuine: no queues, no full car parks, and you can comfortably sit down at any table.

The Szigliget Castle is open at this time too, and the panorama that opens up as you walk up the slope is just as stunning all year round. The only difference is that now you can stand there alone.

The new Bálint Magyar of Palona historical nature trail

This is new. Following a development worth nearly 600 million forints, the Bálint Magyar of Palona historical trail opened this spring. It connects eight sites and is named after the legendary captain of Szigliget Castle.

The route leads from the starting point below the castle, through the castle and the József Paál Exhibition Space, across the Old Village to the Avas church ruins, then to the viewpoint by the Holy Trinity Chapel, on to the former Farkas Villa, and ends at the Old Castle. Even if you already know Szigliget, you can now see it with new eyes: uniform information boards that blend into the landscape help you find your way, and a new guide app offers four themed walks of varying difficulty in several languages.

The trail can also be combined with the old Kamonkő trail, which starts from the Szigliget church, is 6 km long and climbs 290 metres to Kamonkő, guiding hikers through the village's charming streets, past the Árpád-era church ruins and through the volcanic landscape. Combining the two fills a whole morning, and you can start it all right next to the house.

The basalt columns of Badacsony up close, with green vineyards beside them and blue sky. A powerful, natural composition.

Badacsony Szürkebarát wine tour, throughout May

Also reachable by bike from Szigliget. The first stage of the Badacsony Wine Triathlon, the Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris) wine tour, welcomes visitors in May with tastings and cultural events in the cellars.

Badacsony itself is already a destination: the volcanic basalt columns, the paths winding between the vines and the panorama from the hilltop are all part of the experience. The wine tour is the icing on the cake.

Kéknyelű Blossom Festival, Badacsonytomaj, 23 May

On 23 May the Kéknyelű Blossom Festival welcomes wine lovers in Badacsonytomaj, where the opening of the Badacsony Kéknyelű season is traditionally celebrated. Kéknyelű is one of the rarest and most characterful Balaton grape varieties, grown on only a few hectares anywhere in the world.

Taste it once and you will understand why.

15 minutes from Szigliget by car, or a pleasant morning ride along the Balaton cycle path.

Inside the Tapolca Lake Cave: turquoise water, illuminated rock walls, a boat in the foreground.

Tapolca Lake Cave, any time

This activity is completely independent of weather and season. The Tapolca Lake Cave is 20 minutes from Szigliget and an experience worth having at least once: rowing a boat through an underground lake system where the ceiling is so low in places that you have to duck.

Especially recommended for children, but adults come out just as amazed.

If you book Napkelte or Délibáb Guesthouse for May now, you can reach all this from here, between coffee on the terrace and a Balaton sunset.
