Papsoka, Balatonfüred's forgotten district where history meets the panorama

When we hear the name Balatonfüred, most of us think of the Tagore promenade, colourful sails or lively summer days. Yet on the edge of town, in the quieter, hillier part, a real treasure is hidden: the district of Papsoka – also known as Siske – where the past and nature live side by side in special harmony. This is also where Szömörce Guesthouse stands, from where a few minutes' walk takes us to the legendary St Michael's church ruins of Papsoka.

The meaning and history of Papsoka: from priests' village to Siske

Papsoka was first mentioned in 1211, in the land register of Tihany Abbey. The name speaks for itself: 'priest's village' or 'priest's estate'. From the 14th century the name Siske spread, but the area was already closely linked to Füred. In the Middle Ages it had a life of its own: vine growing, fishing and a religious centre on the hilltop.

Time travel in Papsoka: a church ruin built on Roman walls

The St Michael's church ruins of Papsoka are among the town's oldest monuments. A Roman villa already stood on the hill in the 4th century, and the Romanesque church was built on its walls in the 11th–12th centuries. In later centuries it was extended with Gothic elements, then destroyed during the Ottoman wars, probably around 1552. Local people used its stones to build their houses – so history was literally built into the walls.

Archaeological treasures in Papsoka: medieval finds and a ship captain's gravestone

The church ruins were excavated and restored in the 1960s. Archaeologists made special finds: a 13th-century copper processional cross, a medieval baptismal font and gravestones, including that of ship captain József Keöd, the last captain of the Kisfaludy, the first steamship on Lake Balaton.

Balaton views and silence: a walk to the Papsoka church ruins

Today the area around the church ruins is a quiet, peaceful place with a breathtaking view of the eastern basin of Lake Balaton, Tihany and the bay of Füred. In spring the hillside is in bloom, and in summer the sunset bathes the ruins in golden light. A perfect place for a romantic walk, a relaxed family outing or a quiet rest while you enjoy the Balaton panorama.
