Szigliget Castle: where Lake Balaton meets history

Szigliget Castle is one of the most beautiful excursion spots at Lake Balaton: here history meets nature and the Balaton panorama. Whether you come with family or friends, exploring the castle is a real experience – with a special view and a touch of the Middle Ages.

Where history comes to life

Szigliget Castle was built in the 13th century after the Mongol invasion, for defence. From the Benedictines it passed to the Tóti Lengyel family, who strengthened and extended it. The castle later became one of the most important border fortresses of the Balaton Uplands, but it was never captured by the Ottomans – a rare exception in Hungarian history.

At the end of the 17th century, lightning struck the gunpowder tower, and the explosion badly damaged the building. Today the restored walls, towers and exhibitions bring the past back to life, while the view of Lake Balaton enchants everyone.

A breathtaking view of Lake Balaton

The castle's greatest treasure is the view. From the top, Lake Balaton, Badacsony and the volcanic witness hills spread out before you like one huge painting. If you can, time your visit for sunset – when the lake turns golden and the quiet of the castle brings a special calm.

A family outing for all ages

The castle entrance is easy to reach, and the path is easy to walk and child-friendly. Inside the walls, interactive exhibitions, spacious courtyards and tower lookouts await visitors. If you like taking photos, you are guaranteed to take some of your favourite holiday pictures here.

How to get to the castle

The castle stands above the historic Old Village , on the 229-metre-high Castle Hill .
If you come by car, the car park on Kisfaludy Street is the best starting point – from here it is about a 10–15 minute walk to the gate, on a signposted, gently rising path.

But if you stay at one of the Lívia Apartmanok guesthouses in Szigliget – the Napkelte or the Délibáb Guesthouse – you don't even need the car: the castle is just a 10-minute walk away. The path leads through shady trees, and the castle's silhouette appears at the very first crossroads.

A Szigligeti vár kőkapuja vezet fel a várudvarhoz, őszi napsütésben, kőlépcsős ösvénnyel és körülötte fákkal.

A tip for the end of the day

Below the castle you will find the Szigliget Castle Courtyard (Várudvar), which is full of life all year round:
in summer it welcomes guests with theatre performances, concerts and outdoor events , and in winter it turns into a cosy ice rink with hot drinks and festive lights.
A light dinner or a glass of Balaton wine at the foot of the castle is the perfect end to the day.

And if you fancy something sweet, stop by the nearby Szigliget ice cream parlour – one of the best in Hungary, where creamy ice cream is handmade from natural ingredients. A cone with the castle in the background: a must on summer afternoons.
